The golden road – or open access journals

This is the solution that equals the traditional publishing method, and aim to achieve maximum dissemination of the material. The two traditional strategies of peer reviewing, and determination of impact of a publication, are both implemented at different stages of the open access publication process.

The most compelling arguments for publishing this way are several. First of all availability, a greater amount of people can reach an open article. Second subscription fees for libraries and institutions are high and fewer institutions worldwide has sufficient funds for subscriptions, and thirdly small high-tech companies who are non-research institutions, but where science is taught nevertheless, find it hard to seek out the nearest library to print the articles they need. With an open publishing model everybody can access research.

This way of publishing will, however, create a new business model for you and your institution as it often requires author payment, meaning that authors themselves are financing the publishing process (a so called APC “article processing charge”) To remove this burden from authors personally institutions can take on these charges. There excist different models for author payment at institutions.
